Denise Sullivan, Bev Buhr, Pamela Jacobson, and Marcia Holtz
were members of the historic recruit class of 1980, which included
the first group of women to become firefighters in Madison.

Last week the Madison Fire Department celebrated International Women's Day in partnership with other area organizations actively working to achieve gender equity in the fire service.

Hosted at Madison College with the help of its Human & Protective Services and NextGen programs, the event also brought together IGNITE: Women of the Madison Fire Department, CampHERO, and Girl Scouts of Wisconsin-Badgerland Council around the 2023 International Women's Day theme, #EmbraceEquity.

A highlight of the celebration was the theatrical premiere of In Her Boots, a feature-length documentary exploring the first 40 years of women at the Madison Fire Department. The Girls Scouts provided cookies, and IGNITE offered coffee and refreshments. It was an opportunity to connect and celebrate before the feature presentation at the Mitby Theater.
