Firefighter Darius GreenRecruit Class 9 is now serving at a fire station near you! Get to know Madison's newest firefighters.

Where are you stationed?
Station 4 (Monroe Street), 'A' shift

What were you doing prior to MFD?

Prior to joining MFD, I worked as an Emergency Room Tech at St. Mary’s Hospital. My time in the ED helped to make me more comfortable with a lot of the skills I use now as a firefighter/EMT.

Why did you want to pursue this career?

I wanted a career that I wouldn’t get bored with. Aspects of the fire service are constantly evolving. It keeps me learning and training to keep up. The various tasks we may be asked to do any given day makes every workday exciting. I was also drawn in by the different paths I can take within the department to further my career in the future.

What are among the most memorable experiences you've had since graduating the Academy?

Significant calls are always memorable and great experiences, but some of my most memorable experiences have been in the station getting to know my crew and learning how I fit into it. Being around a group of people that welcome you and are happy to share their knowledge and experiences makes for a great learning environment.

Tell us something you enjoy about the territory you serve.

Working near campus, there is a truly diverse population of people we serve. We get to meet people from all different walks of life. Plus, being right across the street from Camp Randall Stadium is awesome. Such a great view.

What advice would you give to someone hoping to join the MFD?

I would encourage them to be patient. The hiring process is long and very unique. Focus on each step in the process and learn about the job and the people you’ll be serving. Volunteer in our community. And if you don’t make it, continue applying and improving yourself to come back better the next time around.
