Firefighter Jonathon McCrayEighteen new firefighters now serve at a fire station near you! Check back daily and get to know them.

Where are you stationed?
I'm at Station 9 (Midvale Blvd.) riding Engine 9 on the C shift.

Why did you want to pursue this career?
Growing up I wanted to do two things: Play sports and become a firefighter. After my dreams of playing sports came to an end, I decided to pursue my other passion, firefighting.

Why did you want to work for the Madison fire department?
Being that MFD is the best—I wanted to work for the best.

What has been the most rewarding part of your experience so far?
Working with my crew and learning how to become a good firefighter. Being out in the community, meeting people, and seeing little kids look up to me with that same expression I had as a kid growing up is really cool.

Looking back at the academy, what was the most challenging element?
Everything about the academy was very challenging. There were no easy days. The most difficult for me was definitely driving from Milwaukee to Madison every day. I would leave early and get home late. After a while it really does take a toll on the body and mind, but if you really want something, you will do anything to achieve it.

What advice would you give someone hoping to join MFD?
No matter how long or difficult it may be to become a member of the Madison Fire Department, don’t ever give up and don’t ever get down. If this is truly your dream job, keep fighting for it. Eventually all your hard work and dedication will pay off.
