Firefighter Justin FehrenbachEighteen new firefighters now serve at a fire station near you! Check back daily and get to know them.

Where are you stationed?
I'm at Station 2 (Grand Canyon Blvd.) on the B shift.

Why did you want to pursue this career?
I wanted to pursue this career because it encompasses everything I want in a job: It's something new every day, and you are always learning and getting better. There's always something to improve on.

Why did you want to work in Madison, for the Madison Fire Department?
The City of Madison and Madison Fire are incredibly unique. I wanted the ability to be a positive role model and do my part for a community and department I truly believe in.

What has been the most rewarding part of your experience so far?
The people I get to work with and learn from. Also, those in the community. It's amazing to see people depending on you or just smiling at you as you drive by.

Looking back at the Fire Academy, what was the most challenging element?
There was so much knowledge between all the training officers—just trying to soak up as much as you can.

What advice would you give to someone hoping to join the MFD?
I would say learn all that MFD does. It's a special organization that's very community-based.  Let them see your excitement while you're going through the process; the opportunity is incredible!
