Firefighter Heather SeeberRecruit Class 8 is now serving at a fire station near you! Get to know Madison's newest firefighters.

Where are you stationed?
I am at Fire Station 12 (South Point Rd.) on the ‘C’ shift.

Why did you want to pursue this career?
When I took an EMT class on a whim, I fell in love with EMS. I had the opportunity to learn about firefighting with a volunteer department, and I liked that it was a physically demanding job.

Why did you want to work in Madison, for the Madison Fire Department?
When I decided to pursue a career in fire and EMS I wanted to be part of the best. I like how the Madison Fire Department has a strong presence throughout the community and that there is a large call volume.

What has been the most rewarding part of your experience so far?
The most rewarding part of my experience so far has been community outreach! I love being able to teach the children who come to our station, meeting my community that I serve, and giving treats to the dogs that go for walks with their owners.

Since graduating the Academy, what are among the most memorable experiences you've had?
Our crew was out doing inspections. We had to inspect a building for children with autism. This little girl came up to me after following me for a little bit and asked what I was doing. I had the opportunity to explain what I was doing and she helped with the rest of the inspection. Afterwards, we allowed her to sit in the engine. Seeing her eyes light up while I was teaching her still gives me warm fuzzies to this day.

Looking back at the Fire Academy, what was the most challenging part?
The most challenging part was trying to balance life with the fire academy.

What advice would you give to someone hoping to join the MFD?

I'm going to give the same advice that was given to me: You need to know who YOU are and be true to who you are. The rest will fall into place.
