Firefighter Joe GanglerEighteen new firefighters now serve at a fire station near you! Check back daily and get to know them.

Where are you stationed?
I'm at Station 10 (Troy Drive) on the C shift.

Why did you want to pursue this career?
I was lucky enough to get to watch my dad go through his career with the Madison Fire Department when I was growing up. Each year I got older I was able to understand more and more what a special job this is. It is an incredibly rewarding profession getting to make a difference in someone’s life every day you come to work. I enjoy the challenge of firefighting and EMS, and I look forward to learning as much as I can about it over the upcoming years.

Why did you want to work for the Madison Fire Department?
The Madison Fire Department has always been the place I wanted to work as a firefighter. I grew up in this city and I want to carry on where my dad left off. The MFD has some of the most exceptional people around, and I couldn’t ask for a better department to work for.

What has been the most rewarding part of your experience so far?
The most rewarding experience so far has been bonding with my classmates in the fire academy. I know that I have made lifelong friends and have gotten to experience excellent training with them in the academy.

Looking back at the Fire Academy, what was the most challenging element?
The hardest part of the fire academy was encountering challenges and keeping your head up to get through them. There is nothing easy about firefighting, but that is what makes it so rewarding.

What advice would you give to someone hoping to join the MFD?
Don’t be discouraged if you don’t get hired right away. Work as hard as you can and try to learn as much as possible. It is worth all the effort you need to put into it.
