Firefighter Lexi WagnerRecruit Class 8 is now serving at a fire station near you! Get to know Madison's newest firefighters.

Where are you stationed?
I'm at Station 4 (Monroe Street) on the 'B' shift.

Why did you want to pursue this career?
I've wanted to be a firefighter since I was a little girl. My interest grew after joining a volunteer department and becoming a certified EMT and firefighter. A previous colleague told me, "If you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life." After hearing that, I knew becoming a firefighter full-time was what I was meant to do.

Why did you want to work in Madison?
I fell in love with the city of Madison three years ago and knew I wanted to join alongside the wonderful people in this community in calling Madison my home.

What has been the most rewarding part of your experience so far?
The most rewarding part thus far is the excited look on kids' faces when they wave to us in the fire truck. I remember being in their shoes as a kid and wanting to sit in the same seat I do now. I am deeply fortunate and honored to be in this position where I get to impact the community.

Since graduating the Academy, what are among the most memorable experiences you've had?
The way the department gives "family doesn't need to be blood" a whole new meaning. It's outstanding to see all the supportive and caring people we call our brothers and sisters come together to lift one another up during hard times.

What advice would you give to someone hoping to join the MFD?
It'll be the best experience that you couldn't even imagine. Work hard, and it will always pay off.

Anything else you'd like to share about yourself?
Outside of work, I enjoy hiking, biking, running, swimming, and kayaking alongside such an active community!
