Lieutenant Ben BoucherWhere are you stationed?
I am assigned to Station 4 (Monroe Street) on the B shift.

What was your previous position?
My previous position was Apparatus Engineer.

How long have you been with the MFD?
I’ve been with the MFD since 2008.

What do you like about your station and territory?
I have a great crew to work with every day. The location of the station—being across from Camp Randall, on campus, and close to downtown—provides a wide range of calls for service and, in general, is a hub of activity.

Our territory is unique in that we have everything from single-family homes to multi-unit, multi-story apartments, student dorms, and hospitals, as well as campus educational buildings with hazardous materials. The primary basis of our responses—life safety—never changes, but the way we accomplish that can differ based on the type of occupancy and the nature of the call.

How has your perspective changed now that you’re a Lieutenant? What’s different about the way you approach your job and respond to calls every day?
The most challenging part of being a Lieutenant to this point, for me, is transitioning from being a hands-on part of the operation as an AE and firefighter for many years, to now stepping back and taking in the entire scene to ensure the safety of my crew, and to oversee our operations and provide direction when needed.

What do you do when you’re not working at MFD?
When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, working out, and playing golf.
