AE Derek BrownWhere are you stationed?
I'm at Fire Station 7 (McKenna Blvd.) on the C shift.

Where were you previously?
I was previously a firefighter assigned to Fire Station 7 on the B shift.

How long have you been with the MFD?
My date of hire was October 19, 2009.

What do you like about your station and the territory?
The territory that Station 7 serves is on the southwest side of Madison. We have various types of construction and building dynamics throughout our territory. I enjoy getting out and meeting the people throughout our territory, whether it's people stopping in at the firehouse or getting out in the community and meeting the residents.

Having 10 people on shift every day, we're able to have more training opportunities, and at a busy firehouse there is always something going on throughout the day. Additionally, having an engine, ladder, medic, and the Hazardous Materials rig stationed here means there's always something to learn or train on.

How do you hope to develop your craft over time?
The fire service creates a unique opportunity-- no matter what your position may be, there's always something to learn or train on. One very important aspect as an driver is knowing your first-in territory extremely well. I intend to continue to study the maps of the city to increase my knowledge. Every day at work there is something to do to better yourself as a professional. Within our department there are always people willing to share their knowledge so we can serve the residents of Madison to the best of our abilities.

What do you do when you are not working at MFD?
When not on shift, I enjoy spending time outdoors. Whether it be hunting, fishing, or golfing, any opportunity to be outside is not wasted. These times are usually shared with my wife and our daughter. Family is extremely important to me and I enjoy every minute I can spend with them.
