Firefighter Brandon Courts

Seventeen new firefighters now serve at a fire station near you! Get to know them by subscribing to the MFD Blog.

Where are you stationed?
I’m at Station 8 (Lien Road) on the C shift.

Why did you want to pursue this career?
I was encouraged to apply by a friend 10 years ago, and through reading and talking to different firefighters, I knew this what I wanted to do. It felt like it fit my personality and work ethic.

Why did you want to work in Madison, for the Madison Fire Department?
Since moving out here 10 years ago, my love for the city has slowly grown, and being able to serve the community makes it not even feel like work.

What has been the most rewarding part of your experience so far?
Being able to serve people during some of the worst moments of their life.

Looking back at the Fire Academy, what was the most challenging element?
High Rise week. Can’t say I have ever walked up that many stairs in a year compared to what we did that week alone.

What advice would you give to someone hoping to join the MFD?
Don’t get discouraged, and keep trying if you don’t make it the first time. Some people get in their first time applying; others take three or more. In the end, when you do get hired, you will say it was worth the wait.
