Firefighter/EMT Barnaby CookWhere are you stationed?
Fire Station 14 (Dairy Drive) on the 'B' shift

What attracted you to this career?
I have always been impressed with how firefighters work as a team to accomplish whatever task they are assigned. It is a very unique career that provides extensive training and maintains a high standard. I cannot think of greater career than to serve others, especially those who need help during an emergency.

Why did you want to work in Madison?
One of the many reasons why I wanted to work for Madison Fire Department was from multiple interactions I had with a friend who also works for MFD. I specifically remember him saying he looks forward to going to work every day. That stuck with me– I knew he worked for a great organization, and I wanted to part of that same organization.

Do you remember your very first call after graduating the recruit academy?
The first call I was on involved a child locked inside a car. My lieutenant and the other members of our engine company did a great job of calmly responding to the parent and adapting to the situation while maintaining safety standards. The academy did an excellent job preparing me for my station, and I am with a great crew that encourages me to continually develop my skills and knowledge.

What advice do you have for someone hoping to join the MFD as a firefighter/EMT?
I knew I wanted a different career but thought firefighting was no longer an option for me due to my age and inexperience. I was fortunate to have a friend encourage me to apply. It is an honor to work for MFD. The department invests heavily into each of their employees. I came into this job without any background and am thankful for the excellent training I continue to receive.
