Physical fitness is critical to the success of firefighters rising to the challenges of the fire ground.
A couple times a week, recruits in the Madison Fire Department's Class 5 break away from the classroom to focus on fitness training.
Experienced members of the MFD serve as fitness instructors and coaches leading recruits through a variety of workouts that challenge their strength and endurance.
In a recent session at the Madison College Protective Services Center, recruits participated in a series of intervals that spanned traditional exercises like squats and lunges to functional fitness workouts like hammer swings and rope (well, hose) slams.
