Firefighter Marta DarrowEighteen new firefighters now serve at a fire station near you! Check back daily and get to know them.

What is your current station assignment?
I'm at Station 8 (Lien Rd.) on the B shift.

Why did you want to pursue this career?
I knew from a young age that I wanted a challenging career that would offer me a different dynamic every day. I sought a career that would keep me mentally engaged, but also be physically challenging. Some family friends with experience in the fire service suggested I seriously consider the fire department. My trial period consisted of a 10-week fire/EMS academy at a local technical college. That was 18 years ago and I have never looked back.

Why did you want to work in Madison, for the Madison Fire Department?

I grew up on the outskirts of Madison. This city is home for me. I have had the opportunity to visit many areas of the world, but I always knew I wanted to establish roots in the area in which I was raised. I love that the Madison Fire Department is such a progressive department. We are always seeking to improve departmental processes and provide better services for our residents.

What has been the most rewarding part of your experience so far?
My most rewarding experience to date is my current work assignment. I have been a military member of the Wisconsin Air National Guard for over 13 years. Just a few short years ago I also became a member of the WIANG - Urban Search & Rescue team. Station #8 is home to the Heavy Urban Rescue Team (HURT). This assignment will afford me the opportunity to expand my skill set and become a more valuable member of both departments.

What advice would you give to someone hoping to join the MFD?
Persistence. This field is incredibly competitive. To anyone who wishes to pursue a career with the Madison Fire Department, I would encourage them to make themselves marketable. Strive to improve yourself every day in a variety of ways. Anyone looking for an opportunity to serve the public in this capacity needs to be selfless, approachable, and compassionate.
