Lt. Matthew MialikSeven new lieutenants were promoted earlier this year. We introduce them to you all week long on the MFD blog.

What is your new station and shift?

I’m assigned to Station 3 on Williamson Street on the “A” shift.

What was your previous assignment?
I had been a firefighter at Station 1 downtown on the “B” shift before getting promoted.

When did you join the MFD?
I was hired September 2004.

What do you like about your station and territory?
I love the feeling of being so embedded in such a dynamic neighborhood. There’s always people walking by the station, waving hello, or stopping for a chat. Willy Street is really one of the best places in Madison!

What’s the most rewarding aspect of this job for you?
I was born in Madison, I grew up here, went to college here, and I’m lucky enough to work for the Madison Fire Department. I take great pride in that!

Anything else you’d like to share about yourself?
I grew up on the west side and our neighbor was a Madison firefighter who’s now retired. I knew I wanted to be on the Madison Fire Department from the time I was a very young kid.

When I got hired and graduated the academy, my first assignment was at Station 1. I walked in the door on my first day and found out it was his crew I'd be working with— the same person who sparked my interest in the job as a kid!
