Firefighter Ryan Beckwith

Eighteen new firefighters now serve at a fire station near you! Check back daily and get to know them.

What is your current station assignment?
I'm at Station 7 (McKenna Blvd.) on the A shift.

Why did you want to pursue this career?
I enjoy working with people and facing new challenges. Being a firefighter offers both of these opportunities every day.

Why did you want to work for the Madison Fire Department?
The Madison Fire Department is a great organization. I have admired the progress it continues to make year after year. The recent ISO Class 1 designation solidifies its commitment to providing top-notch service to the community. I’m thankful to have the opportunity to be a part of that.

What has been the most rewarding part of your experience so far?
My crew. They work hard to ensure I get the training I need to be successful. They aren’t just on the job, they are into the job. It’s a good atmosphere to be in.

Looking back at the Fire Academy, what was the most challenging element?
Smoke divers was definitely the most challenging week of the academy. This week brought us closer together as a class and showed us what we were really capable of doing.

What advice would you give to someone hoping to join the MFD?
Be a good person. Experience and certifications are good, but they can only take you so far. The process is very competitive and it often takes many attempts to land the job, but it’s worth the effort. This is a great organization.
