AE Dan SmithEight new Apparatus Engineers (AEs) were recently promoted and assigned to a station near you! Get to know them on the MFD Blog.

Where are you stationed?
I'm on the A shift at Station 5 on Cottage Grove Rd.

What was your previous assignment?
I was a Firefighter at Station 4, “Bucky’s Firehouse,” on Monroe St. for the last 9 years.

How long have you served with the MFD?
I will be starting my 17th year with MFD in October of this year, and 23 years in the fire service.

Why did you want to be an Apparatus Engineer?
I felt like I was ready to accept the challenge of leadership. As an Apparatus Engineer, we will occasionally be needed to act as the officer of a crew. To gain that experience is invaluable as I look toward a promotion to Lieutenant in the future.

What do you like about your station and territory?
Station 5 is a very large territory, which presents many challenges as a new engineer. I look forward to getting to know the neighborhood and the buildings in my new territory.

What's the most rewarding aspect of the job for you?
Helping people on their worst day, helping to restore order from chaos, and after 23 years, I am still excited to come to work!
