Firefighter/EMT Troy Hinchley standing next to Engine 5Where are you stationed?
Station 5 (Cottage Grove Road) on the 'B' shift.

What attracted you to this career?
What attracted me to this career is being given the training and knowledge to help people in their time of need. I can’t think of a better feeling as I drive home than knowing I may have made a difference in someone’s life. We have to be problem solvers on the fly and I think that is one of my strong suits, as well as for many firefighters here at the MFD.

Why did you want to work in Madison, for the Madison Fire Department?
I grew up right down the road from Madison, so I adopted it as my hometown. The MFD is a highly regarded department in the country. The equipment that we are fortunate to have is some of the best in the fire service. Health and safety of the firefighters here is very important and taken seriously. This is the best job in the world, and I have to pinch myself every morning before work!

What was your first day in the station like?
The first day in the station was awesome! I was placed on a great crew that took me in and showed me the ropes right away. I do not remember any memorable calls that day, but I do remember we had over a dozen calls, various in nature. During my second shift, we got to do some ventilation on a fire.

What advice do you have for someone hoping to join the MFD as a firefighter/EMT?
If you are looking to join the MFD and have no fire or EMS experience, do not hesitate to start applying. While applying, try volunteering at local departments to get a taste of the job. Be yourself at the interviews and use your own unique life experiences to shine.
