Vaughn BrockelEighteen new firefighters graduated the MFD Fire Academy on November 6, 2015. We introduce them to you on the MFD Blog throughout December.

Current station assignment: Station 1 (Dayton St.)

Why did you want to be a firefighter?
I’ve wanted to be a firefighter for as long as I can remember. I’m not sure what started it because I am the first in my family to join the fire service. Maybe it was a childhood dream I never grew out of.

I think what really led me to pursue a career is the fact that it is not a desk job and no day is like the previous. Also, the community aspect-- my parents have always had jobs that were about helping people, and they taught me to do the same.

Why did you want to serve in the city of Madison?
Madison is where I grew up. I went to LaFollette High school, and being a firefighter is my dream career.

What has been the most rewarding part of your experience so far?
So far, the most rewarding thing has been creating new friendships and “family” with the brothers and sisters on the job.

Looking back at the Academy, what was the most challenging element?
The most challenging element of the fire academy was smoke divers week, but it was also the most fun.

What advice would you give to someone hoping to join the MFD?
My advice would be to start investing in the community, staying physically fit, and start or continue learning about the job.
