This week on the MFD blog, we're introducing you to five new lieutenants
now serving at a neighborhood fire station near you.

How many years have you served with the Madison Fire Department?
17 years.

What is your new station/shift assignment?
Station #10 on the "A" shift.

What kind of leader do you model yourself after?
I do not have one individual in particular, just a mix of past and present firefighters that have worked for the fire department. Over the years I have taken positive attitudes and work ethics from those individuals to hopefully infuse them into my own leadership style.

We are encouraged to become leaders in some aspect from Day One on this job, and to take on more responsibility as we progress in our careers. Being a leader is not always something that you cognitively realize – sometimes it is just the way you carry yourself around the station or on calls, and sometimes it is something you actively work on.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to get on the fire department?
To get involved in their community’s volunteer fire department and start getting some education about the fire service to really see if this career is for them. It is a big commitment and should not be taken lightly!

Is there something you look forward to the most?
I am looking forward to working with my new crew and forging a new relationship with them. That is one of the most rewarding aspects of the fire service—the things you accomplish with your crew, having that bond with them, and knowing them as your fire department family!
