18 firefighter recruits walked across the stage last Friday to receive their badges and pledge an oath to serve and protect the City of Madison with integrity, courtesy, respect, compassion, and trustworthiness.

After months of classroom instruction and hands-on training, these recruits leave the Academy as certified firefighters. Some are already serving at a fire station near you as firefighter/EMTs. Others are currently participating in the MFD EMS Academy to acquire their EMT-Basic certification before entering the field.

Recruit Class 7’s completion of the Fire Academy comes on the heels of Class 6’s graduation this past December. It’s not common for two Fire Academies to run in close succession like this, but thanks to a federal Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant, the Madison Fire Department is able to meet the staffing demands presented by the opening of our brand new fire station, Fire Station 14, slated for later this year.

We’re excited to bring these new recruits aboard. Please help us welcome them to your neighborhood!
