Eighteen new firefighters graduated the MFD Fire Academy on November 6, 2015. We introduce them to you on the MFD Blog throughout December.
Current station assignment: Station 3 (Williamson St.)
Why did you want to be a firefighter?
Growing up with my father in the fire service, it's all I've ever wanted to do and I wanted to stay involved in my community. I wanted a career that offers new challenges every day, and I wanted to be a part of the brother- and sisterhood that the fire service offers.
Why did you want to serve in the city of Madison?
Madison will always be home to me, and being able to work here in a rewarding career like this has been very fulfilling for me.
What has been the most rewarding part of your experience so far?
My first day at the station was the most rewarding part of the experience to this day. When I looked back at how far I’d come to get to that first day on the job I realized that my hard work paid off. I had already learned so much and knew that I would learn a lot more in the years to come.
Looking back at the Fire Academy, what was the most challenging element?
Smoke divers was easily the hardest part of training. I knew that we were going to fail but we had to stay positive and keep our composure. Being able to keep it together and work as a unit was a very daunting task. We made the best out of the situation and it taught us how to work against adversity.
What advice would you give to someone hoping to join the MFD?
I would advise anyone that wanted to apply to MFD to make sure that they are a goal-oriented person and that they are willing to work hard for the community. It is not a job that allows room for error. We are required to give our best every time we go to work. Being a responsible adult is also an important part of working for the department. We are on duty whether we are working or not.
