Velma AvalosToday we say goodbye and wish the best of luck to Velma Avalos.

For over 13 years, Velma has served as the Administrative Assistant to the Fire Chief, starting with Chief Debra Amesqua in 2003 and wrapping up with Chief Steven Davis today.

In addition to keeping the Fire Chief on task (sometimes a feat on its own!) Velma supervised the clerical support staff that keeps the department running by processing invoices, uniform orders, building plans, and much more. During her tenure the team has grown from just two people to five full-time clerks.

While working at MFD, Velma has especially enjoyed assisting with hiring processes.

“It was so exciting to see the number of firefighter candidates come through and get to the final stage,” she said.

She’s had input in the hiring process for several Fire Academies, as well as Division Chief, Public Information Officer, and the clerical staff.

Meanwhile, she’s been a student at Edgewood College working toward a Nursing degree. She’s stepping away from her desk to focus full-time on her studies.

“I wanted to do something to honor my daughter who passed away in a car crash," she said. "Maybe someday I can save somebody else’s son or daughter. Even if I can save just one life, it will be worth it.”

She anticipates graduating in December 2018, and many at the MFD have already marked their calendar for the big day. Best wishes, Velma, and thank you for your service!
