Where are you stationed?
I’m at Fire Station 2 (Grand Canyon Blvd.) on the A shift.

Why did you want to pursue this career?
I wanted a career where I’m able to work with and help others at the same time. I enjoy the feeling that I’m doing good in the community day in and day out, being a part of something that’s bigger than myself. I enjoy the challenges this career offers with the constant learning needed to be able to get the job done. This career offers everything I have ever wanted.

Why did you want to work in Madison, for the fire department?
I enjoy the tight-knit brother-/sisterhood they have. It’s like everyone is one big family, not just coworkers. There are also many different avenues for constant learning with this career, such as the special teams and paramedic program, which I plan on being a part of. It pushes you to want more and expect more out of yourself.

What has been the most rewarding part of your experience so far?
I would have to say being able to help people in their time of need. I never thought that I would be able to make a difference in someone’s life, and the feeling is very rewarding.

Looking back at the Fire Academy, what was the most challenging element?
The most challenging part for me was getting back into “school mode.” I’ve been out of college for a couple of years. Physically, the academy was very challenging, but going through an accelerated program about something that I have never learned anything about was the hardest part.

What advice would you give to someone hoping to join the MFD?
Don’t give up! The hiring process is long, but it’s well worth it. Working for the Madison Fire Department is the best career you could ever hope for.
