Mayor's Office

One of the bright spots in these troubled times is the great work City staff are doing for each other and our community. I want to share a few of these stories with you, and I encourage you to share more with us.

The folks in our City Treasurer’s Office work on the first floor of the City County Building and are one of the very few offices open for walk-up business. Other offices are still working, but mainly from remote locations. But the Treasurer’s office has stayed open to accept payments, assist with permits, and more. Of course they are also fielding many other questions from residents who are trying to conduct City business and they are doing so with kindness and compassion. I so appreciate their work.

Also on the first floor of the City County Building is our amazing Clerk’s office. Our clerks and poll workers, along with folks from Library, Parking Utility, Parking Enforcement, Parks, Monona Terrace, Planning, Building Inspection, and Fire, are all working to make sure we have a safe and fair election. They have adapted and innovated with amazing speed, inventing curbside voting and issuing over 80,000 absentee ballots. I appreciate them so much, and I know the community does too – in fact, Blue Plate catering delivered hot meals today as a thank you for all their hard work.

At Madison Metro, we have a large group of drivers who are taking the time to thoroughly clean and disinfect every bus before it leaves for a new route. These employees are working to take care of our residents and their colleagues, and making sure that people who depend on transit can still access it.

I was also delighted to see a letter from Karen Andro, Director of Hope’s Home Ministries with 1st United Methodist Church. She wanted to express her deep appreciation for Madison Police officers Kraig Kalka and Ken Brown for their assistance in her efforts to provide food for individuals and families.

We have other City employees being thanked as well including a wonderful letter to Madison Water Utility for the work their employees are doing. One resident also wrote a lovely note of thanks to Streets Department employees. To ensure they saw it, the note was taped to their trash receptacle.

In a time when so much is changing, it’s comforting to know that City staff are still going above and beyond to deliver the services our community counts on.

Please continue to stay home, wash your hands and practice physical distancing. Those actions are very important as we work to protect our other first responders, the doctors, nurses and hospital staff working at the front line during this pandemic. We owe it to them and their families.
