Please note that this is a general outline of vacation & holiday benefits. These vary by department, position and compensation group. Contact your Payroll Clerk for information specific to your position and/or compensation group.

The leave time outlined below does not apply to Metro Transit employees. Metro employees' leave time can be found in the Employee Benefits Handbook.


Vacation is earned upon starting employment and can be used after completion of probation. The general vacation schedule is below.

0-3 years 10 work days of vacation per year
After 3 years 12.5 days
After 7 years 15 days
After 11 years 17.5 days
After 15 years 20 days
After 19 years 25 days
After 27 years 27 days


Employees have paid leave, or double pay plus a day off if working on an official paid holiday. Sunday holidays will be celebrated on the following Monday. Saturday holidays are transferred to an extra vacation day.

Official paid holidays:

  • New Year's Day
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday
  • Memorial Day
  • Juneteenth
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving
  • Christmas Day

Paid Leave

Employees also receive the three following days as paid leave. No double time pay is awarded for working on these days.

  • Ho-Chunk Day (Day after Thanksgiving)
  • Christmas Eve
  • New Year's Eve

Personal Days

In addition to vacation and holidays, employees earn 3.5 personal days per year. These may be used at any time, with supervisor's approval, including during an employee's probation period.
