The Madison City Clerk's Office will simulate an election on Tuesday, October 11, to determine exactly how much extra time voters will need to spend in line at the polls when the new voting laws are fully implemented in 2012.

Anyone is welcome to participate as a voter from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in room 108 of the City-County Building. Regular City of Madison polling places will not be open.

The new election laws require voters to sign the poll book and present photo identification. Voter registration rules now require 28 days to establish residency, and prohibit the use of a corroborating witness for proof of residence.

The new laws also significantly shorten the time frame for absentee voting in the City Clerk's Office to a total of 12 days (including one weekend), and require in-person absentee voting to end the Friday before an election.

The City Clerk's Office has scheduled 74 presentations and workshops so far to educate voters about the new laws.
