Absentee ballots are now available for the September 14 Primary Election.

City of Madison voters are now able to check the status of their absentee ballot request through the Voter Public Access website, https://vpa.wi.gov. This online resource allows voters to verify that the City Clerk's Office has processed their absentee ballot request, mailed their absentee ballot, and received their voted ballot in the mail.

The Madison City Clerk's Office has a goal of zero absentee ballots rejected at the polls. In the November 2008 General Election, 13 percent of the absentee ballots cast by Madison voters could not be counted. Here are four things you can do to make sure your absentee ballot is counted on Election Day:
• Return your ballot on time. Allow plenty of time for the Postal Service to deliver your ballot by Election Day. Don't wait until the last minute!
• Check the address on your absentee certificate envelope. This is the address where you are registered to vote. If you have moved, you must re-register before you may cast a ballot.
• Sign the certificate envelope.
• Have a witness sign the certificate envelope.

Absentee ballots are mailed to registered voters who have submitted an absentee request that contains their name, Madison address, address to which the ballot should be mailed, and original signature. The deadline for requesting that an absentee ballot be sent to you by mail is Thursday, September 9. Requests can be sent to:

Madison voters can vote absentee in the City Clerk's Office Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Clerk's Office will also be open for absentee voting on Saturday, September 11, from 9 a.m. to noon.
