Madison Senior Center hosts Special May Events

Each May the nation recognizes older Americans for their contributions and provides them with information to help them stay healthy and active. This year, we focus on injury prevention with the theme, Safe Today, Healthy Tomorrow.  Older adults are at a much higher risk of injury than the rest of the population.  By taking control of their safety, older Americans can live longer, healthier lives.

One of May’s highlights is the Sixth Grade Essay Contest on Wednesday, May 7, from 3:15 – 4:30 pm.  Hear students from seven Madison Metropolitan School District middle schools read winning essays on: “My Best Older Friend” or “My Grandparents.”  The essay contest involves 720 Madison sixth-grade students and is hosted by the Madison Senior Center and the four Madison Coalitions of Older Adults.  Listen to the sincere reflections of these young people, topped off with some fun social time featuring ice cream sundaes. Look for parents and speaker Alex Fralin, Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools.  Kindly register at 266-6581.

Celebrate Older Americans Month and take charge of your health with the theme, Safe Today, Healthy Tomorrow.  Improve your balance with Ballroom Basics for Balance, starting May 2. Learn about diabetes in the monthly Sweet Spot classes and discover the healing power of laughter with a presentation from Gilda’s Club. Discover how to deal with Stress and Sleep Better, take a Gardening Class, Watercolor Class and the AARP Drivers Safety Class.  Sign up for Medication Review on May 14.  Stop by to see the upstairs gallery, filled with An Artful Affair. Call the Madison Senior Center at 608-266-6581 or see MadisonSeniorCenter.org for details.
