West side neighborhoods will be celebrating the installation of a new traffic signal at the intersection of Gammon Road and Tree Lane from noon to 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 12, 2008. The celebration will include a ribbon cutting ceremony at 12:15 p.m. and a short program including remarks by Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz and a Madison Metropolitan School District representative.

This is a key intersection on a heavily traveled through street that experiences heavy pedestrian use throughout the day. To the east of the intersection are James Madison Memorial High School and Jefferson Middle School. To the east is the recently completed Lussier Neighborhood Center (formerly the Wexford Ridge Neighborhood Center). To the west of the intersection are the neighborhoods that are served by the schools and neighborhood center, and major retail and service providers that serve the students. There have been many well-documented traffic problems and conflicts with pedestrians through the years. West side alders, public safety officials, school officials, neighborhood leaders, and many others worked for many years to make this important public safety improvement a reality.
