a BLINK temporary public art project

Don't BLINK! It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Seabird, a kinetic temporary public art sculpture, created by emerging Madison artist Kent Hutchison. Madison claims very few kinetic sculptures, so we've got our eyes wide open ready to see what this recent UW-Steven's Point graduate did with a little wind, some steel, and ball bearings. Seabird, is created in homage to lakefront waterfowl that live in Wisconsin and often make Monona's shores in Law Park their temporary resting ground. The artist is hosting a public unveiling of this work on Friday, November 21 at 2:00 pm at Law Park (on John Nolan Drive adjacent Monona Terrace). Please join him!

While you're visiting the new "Seabird," you might enjoy taking a fresh look at the old "Timekeeper" (1983), by Robert Curtis. After you contemplate the metaphorical architectural forms used to manifest the concept of "new ideas in harmony with old." You can be the judge of how this ephemeral new art harmoniously co-exists (or not) with older static sculpture in the space of Law Park.

Creating this temporary sculptural installation is a first step into public art for Hutchison, a young artist, who intends to make a career in creating large-scale public sculptures for all to enjoy. Hutchison is also committed to community building through art and is willing to work with groups and after-school programs to teach folks about the magic of weights, counter weights and pivot points and to help them create small scale kinetic works of their own. Please contact Kent Hutchison directly about "Seabird" or setting up a workshop on kinetic sculpture making.

This BLINK temporary art project will fly low along the shores of Lake Monona from now until November of 2009, so you will have a full year to grab your pinwheels and whirligigs, and bike, blade, walk, jog and roll to it see "Seabird."
