The Madison Arts Commission reviewed 44 applications from artists and design teams interested in creating site-specific art work/fountain for Frances Plaza as part of the State Street Design Project. Five internationally recognized artist teams including Actual Size, Tom Askman, Mycklebust + Sears, Roger Stoller, and Howard Ben Tré were chosen from among the initial applicants to proceed to the next phase of selection. On Thursday, June 5, 2008 at 5:30 pm in the Wisconsin Studio of the Overture Center, the finalists will publicly present their proposals for a water feature for Frances Plaza. Members of the public, who attend the presentations, will have the opportunity to register their opinions about which proposal they prefer, before the selection committee meets to make their decision that evening.

In order for the community to have the chance to learn more about the artists, Stu Levitan, the host of Access City Hall, interviewed each of the artists in the Channel 12 studios. The artists were asked about their past works, their creative philosophy, and their initial impressions of Frances Plaza. These interviews were recorded and are being broadcast on Madison City Channel 12. The videotaped interviews are available to download and view at any time between now and June 5th at: www.cityofmadison.com/MAC/public/francesPlaza.cfm

After watching the interviews, the selection committee encourages interested citizens to contribute their thoughts and impressions of the artists and their work by e-mailing kwolf@cityofmadison.com or by downloading the comment form from the Arts Commission website and mailing it to the address found there.
