It’s already one of the most successful water conservation programs ever launched in Madison. Now, Madison Water Utility is expanding its popular Toilet Rebate Program to include commercial, industrial and public authority customers. That means restaurants, bars, schools, churches, hotels, and other businesses and non-profits can now take advantage of the program, which gives customers bill credits of up to $100 for replacing a high water use toilet with an EPA-rated high-efficiency model. Previously, the Toilet Rebate Program was only available for homes and apartment buildings.

Since 2009, Madison Water Utility’s Toilet Rebate Program has helped its customers replace more than 13,000 older toilets, saving an estimated half-billion gallons of water.  People who’ve taken advantage of the program have also saved a combined $2.6 million in water and sewer costs.

Madison Water Utility has set aside $250,000 to help fund the replacement of 2,500 toilets in 2016. It’s all part of a continued focus on conservation, sustainability and efficiency that has helped the city’s annual water use drop below 10 billion gallons for the first time since 1968. The utility hopes the program expansion, coupled with a new online conservation tool that gives customers access to their detailed water usage data, will help continue the trend of declining water use in Madison and protect the artesian aquifer that serves the city for generations to come.
