Sidewalk Poetry Dedication Event & New Poet-in-Residence at Monroe Street Library

The Madison Arts Commission and Monroe Street Library invite you to celebrate National Poetry Month on Monroe Street in two special ways.

Monroe Street Sidewalk Poetry Dedication on April 10, 6:00pm at Monroe Street Library with Madison's Poets Laureate past and present. Celebrate 12 new sidewalk poems on Monroe Street and meet current Madison Poet Laureate Oscar Mireles and former City of Madison Poets Laureate Fabu, Andrea Musher, and Wendy Vardaman. Poetry on Sidewalks is an initiative of the Madison Poet Laureate Program in conjunction with the Madison Arts Commission, to bring poetry to the streets.

We also invite members of the public to explore a pilot Poet-in-Residence initiative during the month of April. Visitors to Madison’s Monroe Street Library are invited to wax or wane poetic with Madison writer Susan Podebradsky as she presents her weekly Poet-in-Residence hours during National Poetry Month -- April 2019.

Susan Podebradsky is a member of a local pop-up, poetry project called Spontaneous Writing Booth (SWB). Spontaneous Writing Booth is a collective of public writers currently organized by Dana Maya. SWB brings poetry-on-demand to events around town giving poetry a place in the social realm and creating the opportunity for people to experience poetry in a personal way.

This pilot Poet-in-Residence spin on Spontaneous Writing Booth places a singular poet in a neighborhood library to hang out with patrons and write or share poems as she wishes. Patrons are also invited to chat with the poet about their favorite poems or try writing a poem on the spot. Poet Podebradsky should be easy enough to find, she will be the poet by the sign that reads, “The Poet is In.”
