Let’s head outdoors this Friday, February 9 at Elver Park! Madison Parks Foundation and Madison Parks have partnered with local recreation and nature experts like Madison School and Community Recreation (MSCR), REI, MadNorSki and more to bring you a day and evening filled with fun winter activities. All events are free to attend. Experience one or all events!

Learn to Snowshoe 1:30-3:00pm*
Snowshoeing is an easy way to get outside and enjoy many of our parks over the winter months. REI and the Aldo Leopold Nature Center will provide an overview of the essential equipment needed and basic techniques to get you started. We have limited quantities of child and adult size snowshoes available – advanced registration is required and may be done online or by phone.
Learn to Cross-Country Ski 3:00-4:00pm*
Learn the basics of cross-country skiing with MadNorSki and REI! Experienced skiers from Madison Nordic Ski Club will teach and demonstrate all the basic skiing skills needed for beginners and novice skiers to get started in this sport. The class is recommended for ages 13 and up. After completing the instruction session and exploring the equipment to find the best ski and pole fit, head over to the trails and test your newly learned skills. No ski permit is required while attending the class. Please bring your own skis and poles or arrive early and rent from the warming shelter. Sit-skis are also available to rent.
Learn to Track Critters 4:00-5:00pm
Learning how to track and identify the footprints of animals is an ancient and largely forgotten art that is not only important for hunters, but also enhances anyone’s outdoor experience. It’s fascinating to know what critters are nearby and see where they have been by following their trail. To get you started, Paul Noeldner, Master Naturalist, will offer an introduction on the basics of identifying the footprints of common animals. Let’s head outdoors and see what we can discover!
Snow Art with Fit2Go 5:00-6:00pm
Design your art in the snow! MSCR will provide the paint, snow molds and tools while you bring your creativity. #SnowArt
Night-Glow Sledding 5:00-6:30pm
Experience an exhilarating ride down the snow-covered hill at Elver Park. No sled? No problem! Madison Parks Foundation has donated sleds to use during this event! Free glow necklaces, while supplies last.
Groove & Glide 6:00-8:00pm
Snow Glow concludes with Groove & Glide. Skate under the stars and lights with fun music, games and prizes. All ages and experience levels are welcome. Bring your own skates or rent a pair from the staffed shelter.
