The Madison Arts Commission in partnership with the Multicultural Affairs Committee is proud to announce One (African) Awareness an exhibition of the recent oil paintings of Madison artist Linda Mathis-Rose. This exhibition was organized by the City’s Multicultural Affairs Committee as part of their Black History Month celebration of “Civil Rights in America”
 
About the Artist: Mathis-Rose started creating art when she was five years old. Her father taught her to draw figures, and eventually themes arose. “[Art] became part of my arms, fingers and thoughts,” she says. As she grew into her art, she struggled to understand how a black female artist fits into the fabric of the Western World. Her work interprets what she has seen and heard over the years. Mathis-Rose shares her vision of the movement of African American people in One (African) Awareness. The twelve paintings in the exhibit range from more representational (Gardener) to more conceptual (Pardon Me, Have You Seen the Wizard).
 
A reception for the artist will be held during an annual celebration of Black History Month on Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at Noon. The event is free and open to the public. The day’s program will include poetry of Fabu and will feature a keynote address by Ms. Joyce Boggess, LLC and Author, The Early Black Settlers of Stephenson County, Illinois, 1830-1930 and President and Founder of Early Childhood Learning Center, a non-profit Day Care/Preschool, a daycare that enrolls children who have been dismissed from other facilities due to social and emotional factors.

The Madison Arts Commission’s ARTspace program is open to all Madison visual artists who would like to showcase original two-dimensional works in highly utilized city spaces.
