We are in the season of giving, which also means figuring out what to do with a lot of extra stuff.

Over the past several days, we shared some recycling tips on how you should handle the excess of things that accumulate during the holidays.

Previous holiday recycling tips:

More Recycling Opportunities at the Drop-off Site
The Streets Division offers many recycling opportunities for Madison residents, especially at the Streets Division drop-off sites. Previous holiday recycling tips shared information about the variety of electronics recycling opportunities, but there’s even more you can recycle.

Recycling Styrofoam
Molded polystyrene, or Styrofoam, can be recycled at the drop-off sites. This material is typically the chunky white material used to package furniture and electronics.

Not all types of foam products can be recycled at the drop-off site. Styrofoam peanuts cannot be recycled at the drop-off site. Neither can foam board insulation or polyethylene foam (this is the soft black foam in some electronics packaging). Check the Recyclopedia for other options for this material.

Recycling Cooking Oil
Rather than throwing away your used grease and cooking oil, bring it to the drop-off site so it can be recycled. Both the Sycamore Ave and Badger Rd locations have a receptacle for used cooking oil. You will need to empty your container into the cooking oil receptacle. Please do not throw the entire container that you used to carry the oil to the site into the cooking oil bin.

Other Recycling Options
Anything the Streets Division collects at the curb can also be recycled at the drop-off site. This includes extra recycling that would not fit into the collection cart, appliances, and large items (including tires). Remember, some appliances require a recycling fee.

The drop-off site also has a bin for metal items that are either too large or too small for the recycling cart.

Hours and Locations
The drop-off sites are located at 4602 Sycamore Ave. and 1501 W. Badger Rd. The sites are open to City of Madison residents only, and proof of residency is required in order to use the sites.

The drop-off sites hours of operation change seasonally. Right now, the sites are open for winter hours. This means they will be open 7:30am to 3:00pm Monday to Friday, and closed during city-observed holidays. The sites will also close at 11am on both Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Winter hours will remain in effect until March 30, 2019.

Additional information regarding the drop-off sites and Streets Division operations can be found on the Streets Division website, www.cityofmadison.com/streets.
