The City of Madison in partnership with Sustain Dane and Neighborhood Food Solutions is happy to announce the return of food scraps recycling in 2023.

Individuals may drop-off certain allowable food scraps to a designated drop-off booth for free at the Eastside Farmers’ Market beginning on Tuesday, April 25, 2023.

In 2022, over 5 tons of food scraps were received at the farmers' market food scraps drop-off sites - and we're excited to see how much more we can compost this year.

Eastside Farmers’ Market Details
The market is located at 202 South Ingersoll Street within McPike Park.

Food scraps drop-off will be available from 4:00pm until 7:00pm during the Tuesday evening market.

The appropriate scraps will be accepted every Tuesday starting on April 25, 2023 and ending on October 31, 2023.

What food scraps will be accepted at the market drop-off site?
The food scraps acceptable in this program are the same materials that would be suitable for a backyard compost bin.

Coffee grounds, egg shells, raw fruits and vegetables, and other similar scraps are allowed.

The program cannot accept meat products, bones, compostable plastics, paper products, grease, or dairy products (including cheese).

Additional details about what can, and cannot, be accepted at the food scraps drop-off site can be found on the Streets Division’s Food Scraps website.

Staff at the food scraps drop-off tent will also be able to provide guidance about what material they can accept.

Will the South Madison Farmer’s Market location return, too?
The South Madison Farmer’s Market food scraps drop-off location will re-open starting on May 23, 2023.
