City of Madison firefighters returned to 9 Loomis Circle shortly after midnight when a stubborn apartment fire traveled into the attic of an adjacent building.
 
Crews were dispatched to the address yesterday evening at 7:23 for a fully involved structure fire. Smoke could be seen from a mile away. As they arrived, firefighters observed flames at the roofline and immediately put up a water tower to keep fire from spreading to adjacent units.
 
At the rear of the building, they found heavy smoke and flames from the ground floor units, into the soffit, and through the roof, indicating a fast-moving fire.  The advanced nature of the fire caused crews to fight it from the exterior, with knockdown taking place at 7:55 p.m.
 
All residents were safely evacuated.
 
The structure is comprised of two buildings of four units each that share a common wall. An engine was left at the scene to maintain a fire watch, as fire investigators began their work.
 
When investigators completed their initial assessment and prepared to leave the scene for the night, they did a final safety check and discovered fire in the roof of the neighboring building. A full fire response was called and the second fire was extinguished.
 
Six residents were displaced by the second fire. They are being assisted by the Red Cross, who were also at the scene.
 
There were no injuries. Damages are still being calculated.
