Madison firefighters remain at the scene of a stubborn warehouse fire at 314 Atlas Avenue on the city’s east side. Crews have struggled with low water pressure, uncertain footing and other challenges posed by the freezing weather.

Crews were called to the scene at 6:12 a.m. today. The fire quickly went to a second alarm. At one point, there were 65 members of the department reporting to the scene. This has required careful management of the department’s resources.

Fire Chief Steve Davis expects the building to be a total loss, but despite the difficult conditions, the fire was contained to a single building. Crews adopted a defensive strategy, fighting the fire from outside the building, once the structural stability became questionable.

The property is owned by Windsor Building Systems, LLC. No one was injured in the fire.

Two Metro buses were brought to the scene to allow firefighters to warm up in between rotations.

Though some crews have been released as the fire has been brought under control, firefighters are expected to remain at the scene for most of the day and possibly into to night to prevent a rekindle.
