Fire Station 14, Madison Municipal Building

The City of Madison Engineering Division is proud to announce national recognition for the work accomplished on two City buildings — Fire Station 14 and Madison Municipal Building (MMB).
The American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) recognized both FS14 and MMB as part of its 2021 Engineering Excellence Awards competition.

The two buildings were recognized on June 17, 2021 during the 2021 Virtual EEA Gala Awards Program.

Fire Station 14
City of Madison’s Fire Station 14 also earned the 2021 Engineering Excellence Best of State ACEC Award.

Fire Station 14 is a LEED platinum certified building, per the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). With its cost effective new design, it not only saves the City of Madison by 70 percent energy cost but it improves the environment for its workers and the community.

The City worked with design firm IMEG Corp. and OPN Architects and General Contractor, Miron Construction.

Fire Station 14 earned recognition for the following features:

  • High-efficiency envelope construction including infiltration barriers and insulation
  • High-efficiency windows
  • Large windows to maximize daylighting
  • Energy-efficient LED lighting with daylight and occupancy sensors
  • Geothermal heating and cooling system
  • In-floor heating with energy efficient air handling equipment with occupancy sensors
  • 50kW photovoltaic solar panels on the roof provide approximately 50 percent of the daily consumption of the building
  • Solar hot water heating to preheat domestic hot water
  • Selecting products that are sustainable, have a high recycling content, and have low odor/emissions
  • Maximizing the recycling of construction waste

Madison Municipal Building
The ACEC nationally recognized the Madison Municipal Building, highlighting the historical restoration and the building’s sustainable features. With a mix of history and modernized eco-friendly technology, the building is also LEED platinum certified, according to the USGBC.

City Engineering worked with MSR Design and MEP Associates for the building’s design and JP Cullen for construction.

Here are some of the sustainable features in place at MMB:

  • Added additional insulation to walls and roof during renovation
  • Reduced air leakage throughout the building
  • Improved indoor air quality for staff and visitors
  • Maintained and restored significant historic aspects of the original building
  • Added insulated storm windows onto historic original windows
  • Energy-efficient LED lighting with daylight and occupancy sensors
  • 20kW photovoltaic solar panels on the roof provide approximately 10% of the daily consumption of the building
  • Added a green roof
  • Selecting products that are sustainable, have a high recycling content, and have low odor/emissions
  • Maximizing the recycling of construction waste

MMB has also won numerous awards in the past including: 2019 Madison Trust for Historic Preservation Restoration Award, Daily Reporter’s Top Projects of 2018, State and National Project of the Year award from the American Public Works Association (APWA) and 2019 APWA-Wisconsin Chapter Project of the Year Award.

ACEC represents multiple engineering companies throughout the United States and provides a voice for those whose excellence needs to be noticed.
