U.S. Cellular, Madison Arts Commission, and artist Marcus Nickel present “Allied Coming Together”

The Allied Dunn’s Marsh Neighborhood Association (ADMNA), in partnership with U.S. Cellular and the Madison Arts Commission will create the City’s first pavement painting at the three-way intersection of Dunns Marsh Terrace, Percy Julian Way, and Revival Ridge, on Saturday, August 23 (rain date Sunday, August 24) from 9am to 5pm.

Last summer, the City of Madison passed an ordinance permitting pavement painting on some Madison streets. Soon after, the Madison Arts Commission voted to put aside $10,000 of seed money from the Municipal Arts fund to help four neighborhoods as pilot sites that could “make the road by walking it.” The four neighborhoods chosen for the pilot initiatives are: Allied, Meadowood, the North side, and Leopold/Arbor Hills.

Pavement painting in Madison was inspired by Portland’s many “intersection repair” projects.  Karin Wolf, the City’s Arts Program Administrator says, “Street painting is a great way to build community and organize a neighborhood around a creative project.  The paintings in residential areas signal to all users of streets that they are in a neighborhood and should have respect for the people who live there.”

U.S. Cellular is sponsoring this initiative and pilot program as part of its Better Day summer initiative, meant to create not only a better day for neighborhood residents, but also a lasting impression on the city of Madison.  The wireless company worked with the City and ADMNA to commission local artist Marcus Nickel, who lives in the Allied neighborhood, to draft a design for the project. Nickel created a trefoil design inspired by shapes at the Alhambra, titled Allied Coming Together. Allied neighbors, along with U.S. Cellular representatives, will come together and work with  Nickel and Sharon Kilfoy, of the Madison Mural Program, to paint Madison’s first pavement painting.

Additional local support and interview opportunities onsite include:

  • Mayor of Madison, Paul Soglin
  • Director of Athletics for the University of Wisconsin, Barry Alvarez
  • Retail Area Sales Manager for U.S. Cellular, Jenny Justman
  • Sharon Kilfoy of the Madison Mural Program
  • Maurice Cheeks, District 10 Common Council Representative
  • Barb Schrank, Chair Madison Arts Commission

The U.S. Cellular Better Day program is a companywide initiative aimed at providing unique experiences and making a lasting impression in communities where their customers work, live and play.

The Madison Arts Commission is a municipal commission that funds artistic activities and initiates cultural programs that integrate, support, and advance arts and culture as an essential part of life in Madison.

Other sponsors of the project include Hallman Lindsay Paints. Hallman Lindsay is donating 75 gallons of traffic paint and providing a discount for any additional paint needed.
