Arrival:
Monday, September 21, 2015 - 4:55am
Address:
300 block N. Blair
Madison, WI
Narrative:

A concerned Blair Street resident called the Madison Fire Department early Monday morning to report smelling smoke and hearing a nearby alarm.

Firefighters met the caller outside, where they could smell burnt food. The caller pointed firefighters toward the area where he believed the alarm was originating. That’s when the crew on Engine 3 entered one of the apartment units and located the burnt food still inside an oven. They removed the food and turned off the oven.

Meanwhile, Engine 1's crew searched the apartment for occupants. One person was found asleep in his bed, unaware of what had been going on around him. This was due, in part, to the fact that there was no fire detector in his apartment; it had been removed. Additionally, he admitted to being under the influence of alcohol at the time.

Before leaving the apartment, firefighters explained to the resident the dangers of his actions and how they could have posed a threat to other people in the building.
