Water Utility

If you notice discolored water coming from the tap or lower than usual water pressure, don't be alarmed! Madison Water Utility crews are once again flushing water mains across the city.

Every spring and summer, crews use a technique called unidirectional flushing to clean naturally occurring minerals from the city's water mains. The procedure involves the systematic opening and closing of hydrants and valves, one section of main at a time, to force the water through the pipes at a high velocity to improve water quality and minimize discoloration. The operation can take from a few minutes to over an hour, although most last about 30 minutes.

Unfortunately, flushing can cause temporary discoloration, very low pressure, or even a short stoppage of service. If you notice a dark or reddish tint to your water, turn on the cold tap nearest the water meter (usually a basement sink) to full flow for a few minutes until the water runs clear.
