Repairs Underway

Water Utility customers on the northeast side of Madison have been experiencing low water pressure and discolored water as a result of a water main rupture overnight. The affected area is within a radius of three to five miles around utility facilities on North Thompson Road where construction work is underway on a building to house a new water filter. A piece of equipment being used by the construction contractor malfunctioned and damaged the water main. Customers near Commercial Avenue and the Interstate have been especially affected by low pressure.

Repairs at the site are currently underway and should be completed by mid-afternoon or sooner. When they are finished, utility crews will open valves to flush out any accumulated sediment and clear out the mains. Until that time, customers may continue to experience low water pressure and/or discolored water.

Customers should not use discolored water. Instead, run a cold water tap closest to the water meter, usually in a basement utility sink, for 20-30 minutes or until the color clears. Discolored water may persist until the work is complete and hydrants have been flushed. If you are still experiencing discolored water after 5 p.m. please call the Water Utility at 266-4665.
