Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
Last Updated: 07/13/2020
The majority of the work on MLK is now complete. During the week of 7/13, the Contractor will be planting the new trees. While performing this work, portions of the sidewalk may be closed, but pedestrian access through the area and to all businesses will remain open.
The City is planning to reconstruction the sidewalks and terraces on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. between the Capitol Square and the Monona Terrace (Main St. to Wilson St.). The project will include removal of the existing pavers and concrete sidewalk, and replacing the sidewalks with new standard concrete and colored concrete. All of the existing trees on these blocks will also be removed, and new street trees will be planted with the project. The project will also include installation of a sidewalk support system, which will allow for an improved growing environment for the new trees.
The new layout for the sidewalk & trees will include a 12 ft. wide mainline sidewalk, constructed of standard concrete, with a row of trees on both sides of the mainline sidewalk. The trees will then be installed with a staggered spacing, and colored concrete will be installed between the mainline sidewalk and the buildings and between the sidewalk and street (Option 3 from the Nov. 21 presentation).
The project has been bid (Parisi Construction is the low bidder), and construction is expected to begin in early April (weather dependent). It is expected that construction will be completed by early July. Work is planned to start on the easterly side of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. (Madison Municipal Building side), and, once work is completed on that side, work will proceed on the westerly side (City-County Building side).
There are a number of points of contact during this project where the public is encouraged to give feedback as part of public information meetings and public hearings. Dates and times are indicated below:
