Narrative:

One person was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries following a single-vehicle crash.

Engine Co. 3 and Medic 3 were called to the area of East Washington Avenue and Dickinson Street. Crews arrived to find an SUV with heavy front-end damage resting against a tree. The SUV’s engine compartment was on fire. The driver, who was unresponsive, was still inside the vehicle.

Engine 3’s crew pulled a hose line and began to attack the fire as other firefighters gained access to the vehicle to rescue the driver. The fire was extinguished before it could spread to the passenger compartment; however, first responders were concerned the driver may have suffered smoke inhalation in addition to traumatic injuries. Paramedics arrived on scene to take over patient care and transported the individual to UW Hospital.

Madison Police also responded and remained on scene to investigate the crash.
