No Injuries Report In Home Mattress Fire, Cause Under Investigation
Madison, WI
The Madison Fire Department is investigating a mattress fire that occurred inside a home on West Shore Drive. The occupants were home and called 911 immediately upon discovering the fire.
Medic 2 arrived on scene within two minutes of dispatch and reported no smoke or flames showing from the outside. Engine Co. 4, not far behind, arrived as Medic 2 went inside the home and found black smoke on the second floor. Engine 4 took an attack line up to the bedroom where a mattress and box spring were on fire. The fire was knocked down at 11:18 a.m.
The mattress and box spring were removed from the house and covered with snow to ensure the fire was completely extinguished. Firefighters opened windows, and Ladder Co. 1 provided a fan to air out the room. Firefighters confirmed there was no fire extension to the house itself.
All occupants had evacuated safely, and one cat was located, unharmed, and returned to its owners. The occupants were not displaced as a result of the fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Damages are estimated at around $5000.
