Arrival:
Friday, January 15, 2021 - 3:56pm
Address:
6900 block Fieldwood Road
Madison, WI
Narrative:

Two people fell ill, and two others were evaluated, after two types of cleaning chemicals were mixed in an attempt to clear a clogged drain.

Engine Co. 11 and Medic 4 responded to the home where occupants explained they first tried to use sulfuric acid to clear a sink drain. When that didn’t work, they tried using Roto-Rooter brand drain cleaner. The mixture of these products produced toxic fumes that filled the home and made everyone, including pets, ill. A plumber was called to the home to assist with the clog, and he too experienced mild symptoms. A neighbor who helped clear the home was also evaluated but reported experiencing no major symptoms.

Symptoms abated with exposure to fresh air. All four people were evaluated by paramedics. The plumber and neighbor required no additional medical attention. The homeowners sought their own medical care and were not transported by ambulance.

Engine Co. 11 remained on scene to ventilate the house and ensure its safety upon the occupants’ return home.
