Incident Type:
Carbon Monoxide
Dispatch:
Friday, August 7, 2020 - 11:10am
Arrival:
Friday, August 7, 2020 - 11:16am
Address:
400 block Grand Avenue
Madison, WI
Narrative:

Firefighters were called to a home on Grand Avenue to check on a carbon monoxide alarm that was sounding intermittently, but persistently, over the last couple of weeks. The occupant told Engine Co. 9 the detector went off a couple of times last week, and each time they would silence the alarm or remove the batteries, assuming the detector was faulty. After replacing the detector and moving it to a new location, it sounded once again. That’s when they called the property owner to check it out, and firefighters were called to assist.

Engine Co. 9 inspected the residence with a Sensit monitor and found very low readings of carbon monoxide on the first level. Firefighters proceeded to the basement, where they determined the water heater was the culprit. Firefighters set up a fan to ventilate the home as they awaited the response of MGE. Gas service to the hot water heaters was shut down, and occupants were able to return to the residence once the atmosphere was safe.

Safety Tip: Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas and is commonly described as “a silent killer.” If your carbon monoxide detector activates, it is important to take it seriously. Evacuate the home and call 911 so firefighters can respond and help you determine whether there is a carbon monoxide leak in your home.
