Winds Cause Garage Fire to Spread to House
Madison, WI 53714
The cause of this fire remains undetermined at this time; however, damage is estimated at around $45,000.
On January 8 at 5:00 p.m., crews arrived to the 700 block of Dempsey Road to find heavy black smoke in the air with a detached garage fully involved with fire. Two cars and a motorcycle were also involved. Strong winds quickly pushed the fire to the rear side of the nearby house and presented challenges for firefighters.
As Engine Company 8 began fire attack against the garage and vehicles, Medic 3 focused their firefighting efforts on the house. Medic 3 continued to protect the house from further fire exposure until complete knockdown of the garage and vehicle fires was achieved. The fire was fully extinguished, and overhaul completed, by 5:29 p.m.
Two searches of the house confirmed all occupants had evacuated safely.
Crews were called to the 700 block of Dempsey Road for reports of a fire in a detached garage at the rear of the house with visible flames and smoke. Engine 3 and Engine 8 were the first to arrive on scene. Additional crews were called in because high wind conditions were pushing the flames towards the house. While the fire was quickly controlled, crews were unable to prevent extension into the rear room of the house.
Damage to the detached garage and multiple vehicles parked adjacent to the garage was substantial. Board-up crews and Red Cross were dispatched to assist the residents.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
